Anuradhapura
The first historical capital of ancient Lanka
Anuradhapura, the heart of Sinhalese civilization since the 4th century BC, served as Sri Lanka’s first historical capital. For over a thousand years, the kingdom thrived under the rule of 117 monarchs who constructed grand palaces, vast reservoirs, intricate irrigation systems, serene gardens, and impressive Buddhist temples. Some of these structures rank among the ancient world’s largest architectural feats, second only to the pyramids of Giza in scale.
Today, the sacred city of Anuradhapura offers visitors a chance to explore its remarkable ruins and restored temples and stupas.
