Habarana

Cultural Triangle in the district of
Anuradhapura and 172 kilometres from
Colombo. Habarana, a city renowned
for its beautiful lake that is a magnet
for birds and its series of relatively
upmarket tourist hotels which make it an ideal departure point for other areas of
interest such as safari tours in the Minneriya and Kaudulla National parks which are
famous for the elephant gathering. However since it’s situated near the majestic rock
fortress of Sigiriya and the golden Dambulla cave temple, it attracts tourists interested
in the historical and cultural significances of these UNESCO World Heritage sites. Habarana is well known for its eco retreats and nature friendly environment.
Harbarana is a popular tourist destination especially for safari-lovers. There are special excursions that are available in the Habarana jungle and the Minneriya sanctuary that takes visitors through the beautiful and rich flora and fauna that is unique to the place.

udawalawa
Udawalawa elephant transit home
is a halfway house for orphaned elephants. After rehabilitation, the elephants are released back into the wild, many into Udawala National Park. Even if you don’t get to get up close with the elephants, it’s still fun to see them at feeding time from a viewing platform elephant Transit Home
(Open During in Feeding time 10.30am / 2.30pm / 6.00pm)
Over 100 elephants have been rehabilitated at the Elephant Migratory Shelter and later released into the wild. There are usually about 40 young pachyderms here at any given time. Many tour operators include a visit to the Elephant Sanctuary in their tours. There are also good informational displays where you can learn about elephants and their ancestors.

Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa Was the second capital
of Sri Lanka. After the destruction of
Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises
besides tha Brahmanic monuments
build by Cholas, the monuments ruins
of the fabulous garden city created by
Parakramabahu l in the 12th century.
The glories of that age can be found in
the archaeological treasures that still give a pretty good idea of how the city looked in
its heyday. You’ll find with hundreds of ancient structures – tombs and temples,
statues and stupas – in a compact core. The Quadrangle alone is worth the trip.
